Kiev (AFP) – The value of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s assets soared despite economic crisis and conflict while those of other tycoons shrank in an annual wealth list published Friday.
The 50-year-old Western-backed president’s business empire ranges from chocolates to media holdings still under his control.
Friday’s independent Novoye Vremya weekly showed the Ukrainian leader — often criticised for failing to curb the political powers of fellow tycoons — ranked as the country’s sixth-richest man.
His assets reportedly rose by 20 percent to $979 million (889 million euros) — only just supporting his claim he is no longer a billionaire.
Poroshenko retains control of a top TV channel and has failed to follow through on his promise to sell off his Roshen chocolate empire due to a lack of foreign interest and a dearth of rich-enough investors in Ukraine itself.
The president’s official spokesman did not pick up his phone when contacted repeatedly by AFP.
“Poroshenko’s (wealth) rose thanks to the rise in value of his candy business that — even in the midst of the deepest of crises — is developing quickly, building new capacities and conquering new markets,” the weekly said.
The wealth list is topped by metals magnate Rinat Akhmetov.
The 49-year-old Akhmetov is a controversial figure accused by some local media of impeding Poroshenko’s efforts to halt the 18-month war in the pro-Russian east.
Novoye Vremya said Akhmetov’s fortunes had plunged by 56 percent to $4.5 billion due in part to the sharp recent fall in global commodity prices.
Poroshenko’s sworn political foe and banking giant Igor Kolomoyskiy came in third with an estimated fortune of $1.9 billion.
The 52-year-old grey-bearded and fiercely outspoken figure finds himself in the peculiar position of being at odds with both Kiev and Moscow.
Russia’s state media accuse him of funding Ukrainian neo-Nazi combat units that commit grave crimes in the separatist east.
Poroshenko’s fight against Kolomoyskiy began with efforts to strip him of his indirect control of a state-owned oil company and culminated in the businessman losing his seat as governor of the industrially important Dnipropetrovsk region in March.
Kolomoyskiy’s wealth reportedly slipped by 17 percent due to the country’s financial woes.
All the others in the top 10 also lost money in the year since the last Novoye Vremya poll.
Ukraine’s economy is on track to shrink by about 12 percent this year and only return to marginal growth should the eastern campaign end in 2016.
– ‘No benefit to president’ –
Poroshenko promotes himself as a Western-style businessman who built his empire from the ground up and kept to transparency standards that most others simply ignored.
Many of Ukraine’s other mega-rich scooped up their holdings at cut-price rates in pre-arranged privatisation deals in which which they rewarded the government by funding its parliamentary parties and campaigning for them in the media.
But analysts said Poroshenko’s reputation may still suffer for being the only one of the country’s already-despised oligarchs to profit while presiding over Ukraine’s worst crisis since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
“This will not benefit the president’s ratings or help improve Ukraine’s image as a nation run by oligarchs,” Vadym Karasyov of Kiev’s Institute of Global Strategies told AFP.
“The world views Ukraine as a poor country with a super-rich minority,” Karasyov said.
The organiser of a boxing show in the occupied Sevastopol, Vladimir Khryunov stated that the famous German band Scorpions will not perform at the event, which has been planned for August 23.
“The Scorpions’ manager had confirmed all the conditions and had agreed on a large fee. Later he sent the following letter: Unfortunately, this is a doubtful territory and we will probably not go. There will be no Scorpions.” – Russian outlet Gazeta.Ru quotes Mr. Khryunov.
Notably, a month ago Mr. Khryunov stated that he was in the process of negotiations with the band, which was to perform at a show named the same as the band’s song, “The Wind of Change”.
Earlier the band had omitted the occupied Crimea from their jubilee tour.
In July, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture included the vocalist of Scorpions Klaus Meine into the ‘White List’ of foreign artists who had not supported the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Woman who sued pro-Putin Russian ‘troll factory’ gets one rouble in damages
Agency that hired people to write pro-Kremlin propaganda was sued by ex-employee Lyudmila Savchuk to ‘bring the internet trolls out of the shade
A Russian court has ordered a secretive pro-Putin “propaganda factory” to pay symbolic damages to an employee who sued them in a bid to expose the workings of the Kremlin’s online trolls.
The Agency for Internet Studies, which hired people to write pro-Kremlin propaganda from a nondescript St Petersburg address, was sued by ex-employee Lyudmila Savchuk for alleged non-payment of wages and for failing to give workers proper contracts.
The freelance journalist claimed she had gone undercover as a pro-government internet troll to expose the outfit.
A judge ordered the shadowy agency to pay Savchuk symbolic damages of one rouble after the two sides had earlier agreed on compensation worth one month’s salary.
“I am very happy with this victory. I achieved my aim, which was to bring the internet trolls out of the shade,” said Savchuk, 34.
For a monthly salary of 40,000 to 50,000 roubles (£490/US$750), Savchuk and other employees bombarded website comment pages with praise for Vladimir Putin.
Unmasked after two months in the job, Savchuk was sacked after she published articles under a pseudonym in local newspapers denouncing the “propaganda factory”.
The Kremlin has claimed that it has no links to the operations of the Agency for Internet Studies.
Authorities in Russia have intensified a propaganda campaign as the crisis over Ukraine has sent tensions with the west soaring to their highest level since the cold war.
The west and Ukraine accuse Russia of sending its troops to fight in its ex-Soviet neighbour but Putin flatly denies the claim and Russia’s state media has done all it can to deflect the accusations.

Our opinion: Whereever you look, in forums inside and outside Russia, there are so many trolls praising their great new Führer, Vladimir Putin. Now it’s officially confirmed that they get paid for their lies.
Let’s hope that Ms Savchuk will not be killed or have an “accident” greated by sinister elements belonging to the Cremlin.
IF YOU WANT TO STAND WITH THE TRUTH, YOU MUST STAND WITH UKRAINE!
“I believe that Russians and Ukrainians form one people.” repeated Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with representatives of public associations in Crimea.
In addition, Putin stated that it was shameful and humiliating for the Ukrainian people to see their country being controlled by external forces, a practice condoned and supported by the current government in Kyiv.
“I am convinced that, despite all the troubles and difficulties, the situation will change in Ukraine. Ukraine will move away from the shameful practices that we see today, namely appointing key governmental and regional positions to foreign nationals.” said the Russian president.
According to Putin, this shameful practice is still positively viewed by most Ukrainians. But, Ukraine will get back on its feet and start developing in a more positive way. The president pointed out that he is confident Ukraine will build its future with Russia.

And what is the lie?
Ukrainians and Russians are not the same people, Ukraians are an independent people and have ever been it and for example started the christianization of Russia!
If it would be true: Would a brother kill his brother?
Putin was, is and remains a liar.
If you want to stand with the truth, stand with Ukraine!

Operational data from Information Resistance:
Russian-terrorist troops in Donbas continue actively shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops, as well as civilian objects, including the use of heavy armaments in a number of areas. At the same time, an increase is observed in the number of terrorist shellings with the use of small arms, which are recorded practically along the entire demarcation line.
The most intense shellings by militants were recorded to the west and northwest ofDonetsk, in areas south of Donetsk (Berezove, Hranitne), in the vicinity of Horlivka, near the Svitlodarsk bridgehead, in the seaside areas, as well as in the area from Zoloteand Orikhove to Shchastya and Stanytsia Luhanska. Units of Russian-terrorist troops are also highly active between the settlements of Novomykhailivka andPeremoha, in the vicinity of Krasnohorivka, Lozove, southeast of Pisky, nearOpytne and Vodyane, south and north of Avdiivka, and in the vicinity of Troitske,Shumy, and Leninske.
In particular, the militants have deployed 120 mm mortars in the area ofNovomykhailivka, southeast of Mar’inka, and in the vicinity of Pisky, Opytne,Avdiivka, and Leninske. Armored vehicles advanced towards the ATO forces’ positions several times, under cover of mortar fire – two tanks fired on the advanced positions of Ukrainian troops near Pisky for 20 minutes; one tank and two BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles shelled the ATO positions near Opytne for 30 minutes (during this shelling, two 125 mm munitions fired by the militants’ tank detonated in the settlement of Vodyane).
Terrorists deployed 122 mm artillery for brief fire strikes against the ATO forces’ strongholds near Troitske, between the Horlivka – Artemivsk motorway (in the area of Kurdyumivka – Zelenopillya), and on the positions near Hranitne. Two strikes were also made on Krasnohorivka.
In the vicinity of Avdiivka, the ATO forces were shelled from 122 mm and 152 mm artillery, and 120 mm mortars. On the first line (closer to Yasynuvata), a terrorist tank group was spotted maneuvering (without opening fire).
In the area of the Svitlodarsk bridgehead, militants used mortars (82 mm and 120 mm) against the advanced ATO positions near Popasna and Luhanske; AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers were deployed against the positions of Ukrainian troops south of Svitlodarsk.
A terrorist armored group (3 tanks) was operating in the vicinity of Shchastya, supported by 82 mm mortars from the direction of Vesela Hora. The armored group shelled the settlement of Shchastya, with advance and retreat of the armored vehicles being supported by AGS-17 grenade launchers. During combat, several militant infantry groups were spotted moving towards and along the demarcation line. These enemy groups opened fire against the ATO forces’ advanced positions, in a number of instances.
A group of “specialists from Russia” has emerged in Luhansk, focused on organizing contraband supplies of food from Ukraine-controlled territory. The group includes 16 people, including 3 women; they are predominantly representatives of the FSB and other Russian authorities. This group has no permanent dislocation, takes special effort to avoid attracting attention (the group members are dressing to look like “local militants”), are moving around aboard two Volkswagen T-4 minibuses with tinted windows (without license plates), two Tiger GAZ-2330 armored combat vehicles, and a “civilian” jeep. Members of these group are reportedly questioning the “LNR” [Luhansk People’s Republic] “businessmen” and “officials” involved in smuggling for information about any corrupt Ukrainian military servicemen (officials in commanding authorities, as well as members of private corps at checkpoints) who are participating in contraband schemes (possibly, to recruit them in the future under threat of blackmail). The local “Ministry of state defense” has been ordered to “provide extensive cooperation” to this group without interfering in its activities. The commanders of the group are in regular contact with the “LNR” leadership, while some of the group members are regularly visiting the “front line.” A similar special group from Russia has been spotted in Donetsk.
